Montmorency claimed the Division One reserves flag in an entertaining contest at a breezy Preston City Oval over reigning reserves premier Bundoora. It was our club's first flag since their reserves won it back in 2005 and joyful celebrations ensued after the game. The contest was fitting for a Grand Final with lots of hard ball to be won and numerous highlights to entertain the large crowd. The Magpies flew out of the blocks with the wind in the first quarter and led 4 goals to nil early on. Benny Finno scored three majors for the quarter. One of these was when man of the match Sam Morales broke free in midfield with pace and steadied himself to hit Finnin on the chest. Dizzy Stanley took the mark of the day when he ran back into oncoming traffic and took a leaping chest mark ala Jonathan Brown. Midway through the term, the Bulls seemed to settle with goals to Mathew Pow and Simon Crump. The goal from Crump was a great kick from 45 metres out which barely cleared the defenders hands. Traj then snapped a great goal from heavy traffic late in the quarter for Monty. The 17 point lead at quarter time left the Bulls within striking distance. Mont lost Crackers to a yellow card just prior to half time and a minor scuffle then broke out on the siren. The players seemed to separate without incident but then Kiel Vann was given a yellow card as the teams were departing the field. After a scrappy beginning to the third stanza, Montmorency's Nicholas Guthrie was gifted a goal when a 50 metre penalty put him in the square. A run of four behinds followed for Monty and they were squandering their chances. They finally regained the lead when Finnin grabbed a ball that came over the back of the pack in the goal square. Late goals to Traja, via another snap and Curtly Swindon gave the Magpies a 17-point lead at the last change. This was exactly the quarter time lead that they were unable to defend in the second term. With only a modest lead, Monty decided on winning the game rather than saving it; and it was cleaner in its ball movement during the fourth quarter. Montmorency scored the critical first goal when Daniel Hussey put Finnin in plenty of space and his kick into the wind bounced through for a goal. The game was slipping away from the Bulls when Stanley was given a free in the square and goaled. Although William Ratje outpointed Bundoora's Mathew Pow on the day, Pow broke away to slot a great goal from 40 out to breathe life into the final. A follow-up goal to Shelton at the 15 minute mark brought the margin back to the three-quarter time margin of 17 points. The Magpies had managed to bottle the ball up in the dead pocket on the grandstand side in Bundoora's forward line. When they were kicking out after a behind, they used the outer side. This proved effective in delivering the killer blow when Scott Pepyat made a long run along the outer forward flank. He drew an opponent and put Stephen Mills in the clear. Mills goaled gleefully and the flag was in the bag. The fact that the final goal was special was a fitting finale for Montmorency. Final scores: Montmorency 12.4.76 def Bundoora 8.7.55 |
